How can I remove a wood screw whose head is broken off?
I would go with John Whitehead advice and use the special screw extractor bit
WoodRiver - Screw Extractor, 1/4"
It drills a surrounding hole around the screw and you wiggle the screw and break off the central portion with the screw. Now you have a clean 1/4 or 3/8 or 5/16″ hole, you plug with the matching size dowel and some wood glue and cut, then sand, flush.

As a result you have a solid piece of wood (and the glue is at least as strong as wood) to drill for a new screw. This also solves the problem of repair - getting a screw into a damaged and ravaged hole and holding.
